I am celebrating my birthday this year by eating a delicious carrot cake. Usually I just have the normal vanilla box cake, but this year is special. It’s been so cold lately (snow the earliest I’ve seen in 25 years of active memory) that I need to load up on the calories.

I know that my small efforts to eat a bit more to increase my calorie consumption is not much to combat global cooling, but I’m doing what I can.

I also am burning firewood this year in the fireplace. Usually I just use electricity (from hydroelectric power), but the rates have gone up so much this year due to tax increases that burning my own wood makes economic sense. I love the smell of burning wood, and the way the smoke rises up on a frosty morning. It’s not a lot, but every bit I can do to heat my cold house at low cost to me is worth it.

And this week I’m driving to work, 40 miles each way. The bus fare was raised again so that it’s actually cheaper for me to drive 40 miles and park (for free!) than it is to ride the bus both ways. So I’m doing my part to conserve my money, and also to avoid the messy, smelly buses with their endless delays, crazy passengers, and inconsistent routes and schedules. Driving my own car means I can set the temperature to what I want, listen to music as loud as I want, and take the shortest route. Driving to work means I can be at the office in 40-45 minutes; taking the bus means I must spend 1:45 – 2:00 hours each way sitting on a hard plastic seat in a cold, drafty bus with people jostling me the whole time.

NY-23 last was in Democrat hands in 1993. Now that’s being touted as “100 years.”

Go figure.

Sarah Palin Gets It

Re: NY 23 election – Sarah Palin, with a short post on Facebook, completely upset the Beltway wise men (and women) about this election. Rather than say “Anyone with an (R) next to their name is fine,” Sarah has followed through with her vow not to simply endorse someone from the Republican party.

I imagine there are quite a few angry discussions going on right now in Washington about finding ways to stop her, and I’ll bet that the majority of the conversations are coming from the establishment Republicans (you know, the Bob Michel Republicans).

She is smart to do an end run. Perhaps she’s read the book “Disruptive Technologies” and knows that simply playing by the same rules as the establishment won’t bring success; instead, she has to leapfrog them.

For someone with a BA from Idaho colleges she sure is showing up the Yalies.
